The 52-Week Savings Challenge: Save $1,378 in a Year

The 52-week savings challenge turns saving into a game instead of a chore — and it's one of the easiest ways to build your first (or next) emergency fund cushion without a complicated system.

How the classic challenge works

  • Week 1: save $1
  • Week 2: save $2
  • Week 3: save $3
  • ...and so on, adding $1 each week
  • Week 52: save $52

By the end of the year, you'll have saved $1,378 — without ever having to save more than $52 in a single week.

The low-income friendly version

If saving $52 in December (when the challenge is hardest) feels impossible, flip it: start at $52 in week 1 and count down to $1 in week 52. You save the same total, but the biggest weeks land when motivation (and often income, around January bonuses or tax refunds) is highest.

Where should the money go?

Keep it simple — a separate, no-fee savings account works best so you're not tempted to dip into it for everyday spending. Pair this challenge with your 50/30/20 budget by treating your weekly deposit as part of the 20% savings bucket.

Tips to actually finish the challenge

  1. Automate it. Set a recurring transfer for the same day each week.
  2. Track visually. A printable tracker you can cross off is far more motivating than a spreadsheet buried in a folder.
  3. Restart anytime. Missed a few weeks? Don't quit — just pick up where you left off.

Once the habit sticks, many PennyBloom readers roll straight into cutting their grocery bill to free up even more room for saving each month.
